and have been wondering about what it really means to be
a nag from the point of view of the nagger and the nagged!!
I stopped by and asked this horse last week if they could
shed any light onto the situation and why they had the
unfortunate label of being a Nag, well as you can see, she
wasn't overly happy with me bringing up such a sensitive
and humiliating topic of conversation, so I had to satisfy
myself by doing research in another way - Google.
The Dictionary defines a Nag as someone who is annoying
or irritating, persistently painful, troublesome or worrying,
faultfinding, like a toothache (ouch).
Another definition says it is probably Scandinavian in origin,
meaning to gnaw, bite.
And yet another source said it came from an Anglo Saxon
term which men used to call their wives, it said "As wives
became more and more ugly men likened them to horses,
hence the name Nag. Well , I don't know about you but I
wasn't planning to become ugly, let alone more and more
ugly. I laughed a lot when I read this, it helped a lot I guess
because this is not a term I have ever heard from my own
husband, (which I'm very thankful for) but I do hear it
thrown around from time to time.
So thats the side from the nagged, what about the one
doing the nagging? I've observed that someone can ask
ten times for the garbage to be taken out and it isn't
done and then they can be called a "Nag", Whats the
alternative? Leave the garbage to pile up? Take it out
yourself?
Sometimes we need to step back and see what is and
what isn't working for us. Maybe its looking at it from
someone elses point of view, where the outlook can be
very different, or maybe its choosing our time wisely to
bring up the problem, or listening to ourselves about the
way that we address the problem. There is always
options for us, we need to be openminded to see them.
By the way, a horse doesn't seem to do much complaining
from what I've seen, I could be wrong though, I think they
have been unfairly labeled, maybe thats what my friend in
the picture was trying to say....
